Our assignment was to design for communities in a specific area, and we were given Hringbraut in Reykjavík, a hospital district currently under construction. We had three weeks to complete the project.
Through research, we discovered that locals wanted more nature in the area and less noise from construction. To meet these needs, we focused on the construction barriers. Our solution was a "soil unit," made from natural materials to support plant growth.
The soil dug up during construction is placed around the site, and the soil units are pressed onto it. Local plants are then planted in the unit. Once construction is done, the plants (now grown into trees and bushes) can either stay as part of the landscape or be moved elsewhere. The soil units can also be reused or recycled. This reduces the use of concrete and new materials, while the plants help block noise and create a better environment for workers and residents.
